Honor Student Ihsan Hamid Presents at Undergraduate Research Symposium

April 23, 2018

Dr. Raj Singh and Ihsan Hamid

University Honor Student Ihsan Hamid was one of the few students selected across all disciplines at UCR to present his capstone research project at the two-day Undergraduate Research Symposium on April 28th and 29th, 2018.

Ihsan is a UCR School of Business undergraduate accounting major, graduating this June 2018. He and his family immigrated to the U.S. from Afghanistan when he was young, and his roots played a part in selecting the focus of his research.

His capstone research project, “Resolving the Misappropriation of Foreign Funds in Afghanistan”, was well received by the participants of the Undergraduate Research Symposium. Specifically, his research demonstrated how tax money allocated for Afghanistan is spent to implement various programs for the U.S. government.

“I realized there is very little awareness about the amount of funds the U.S. has been sending to Afghanistan and the amount of funds that were misappropriated,” Ihsan expressed, which was the biggest takeaway from his experience researching and presenting. After his presentation, Ihsan answered several questions from the audience about the current issues of the financial side of the war in Afghanistan.

Sponsored by the Office of Undergraduate Education, the symposium is an opportunity for students in all disciplines to present their faculty-mentored research to an audience of peers, faculty, and administrators.

Ihsan thanks UCR School of Business and UCR Honors Program for giving him the opportunity and resources to work on a project of such magnitude. Ihsan was mentored by Dr. Raj Singh, Professor of Management at UCR School of Business and sincerely thanks Dr. Singh for his guidance and for providing assistance through every step of his research project. Mr. Dennis McIver and Ms.Tanya Nieri also assisted with planning techniques and support throughout the process.
