CHRM holds charter ceremony

Group will aid UCR students who plan to pursue a career in human resources management

CHRM induction

The UC Riverside School of Business Administration Community for Human Resource Management (CHRM) held its charter ceremony last Friday. Along with the induction of the club’s officers, the ceremony served as the official inauguration with the purpose of aiding UCR students who plan to pursue a career in human relations management.

CHRM will affiliate itself with the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM), a global human resources professional organization. SHRM helps to build and sustain partnerships with human resources professionals and help to address management challenges that influence the effectiveness and sustainability of organizations and communities. The organization represents more than 275,000 members in over 160 countries.

CHRM president Leah Navarro has been the driving force in creating the club.

“CHRM will help us to be known on a nationwide scale with SHRM,” Navarro said. “The goals of our club will be focused on the profession of human resource management. We started at the beginning of the school year, but we wanted to build awareness on campus first before we held our first ceremony.”

SoBA Lecturer of Management Raj Singh serves as the faculty advisor for CHRM.

“I believe CHRM will provide opportunities for our students to develop leadership skills and current knowledge of human resources issues,” Singh said. “As a result, our students will be more effective as employees and managers in their future organizations.”

Guest speakers for the event included Darlene Cohen, Chair of the Riverside chapter for PIRHA (Professionals in Human Resources Association) and Marilyn Monahan, President – Elect for PIRHA. PIRHA is the largest affiliate of SHRM, representing more than 4,000 members located in Riverside, Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Ventura counties.
