Financial Assistance Opportunities For AGSM students

Fellowships

Each year The A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management (AGSM) awards several fellowships to new and continuing MBA students on the basis of merit only and merit plus financial need. Recipients must be in good academic standing and within normative time to the degree. Minimum GPA for continuing students is 3.5. Domestic recipients and continuing international student recipients must complete and submit a "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA).

Research Assistantships

Graduate student researcher (GSR) positions for one or more quarters are available periodically to assist AGSM faculty with research. Researchers work with faculty in a variety of research areas such as marketing research, economic development, finance, and accounting. There will also periodically be opportunities for "reader" positions to assist faculty with grading. Students interested in these positions should contact the faculty members with whom they are interested in working. GSRs must remain academically eligible, maintain a 3.0 minimum GPA, and carry a full-time course load.

Employment Awards: PFR & GSHIP

Students who are appointed at 25% or more time during an academic quarter as a graduate student researcher (GSR) or teaching assistant (TA) are entitled to PFR (partial fee remission) and GSHIP (graduate student health insurance premium) remission. This entitlement pays the entire health insurance premium and most (but not all) of a student's mandatory university fees (not including non-resident tuition or professional school fees). UC Riverside’s School of Business Administration provides the Graduate Division with a list of the students who are eligible for this entitlement before the student bills are printed. If an award is placed on the system after bills are printed, the student's bill will not reflect the correct fees owed.

Teaching Assistantships

UCR’s School of Business Administration offers numerous teaching assistantships to qualified first- and second-year MBA students. Teaching assistants (TAs) lead discussion sections and provide assistance to faculty in undergraduate business administration courses. Applications for these positions are normally accepted in the spring quarter for the following academic year. Announcements concerning these positions will be posted. TAs must remain academically eligible, maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA, and carry a full-time course load.

Teaching Assistant Development Program

Each new teaching assistant is required to attend the Teaching Assistant Development Program's (TADP) orientation in the fall. Students are also required to attend TADP's quarter-long training program. TADP provides services to the more experienced TA as well, including a teaching resource library, teaching portfolio development and assessment consultations, and seminars on professional development. TADP also coordinates a Mentor TA program, in which TAs of proven ability have the opportunity to work closely with their less experienced colleagues. For more information on training requirements and upcoming seminars, send an E-mail to the TADP office or call (951) 827-3386.

The Speak Test

To be appointed a teaching assistant, any student whose native language is not English must pass the SPEAK test. This includes not only international students, but also any student whose first language is not English. Those who score a conditional pass can be appointed as a TA but are required to participate in the appropriate English language classes at the Learning Center and retake the test.

Speak Test Rating Scale:
Clear Pass 50–60
Conditional Pass 40–45
Fail 20–35
