Professor Kathleen Montgomery selected as Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

April 18, 2018

The Academy of Social Sciences has selected Kathleen Montgomery, UCR School of Business Emerita Professor of Organizations and Management, as one of its conferred Fellows.

On April 5th, 2018, the Academy of Social Sciences (FAcSS) announced the fifty-eight conferred Fellows, which are selected from academics, practitioners and policymakers in the social sciences. The selection process involves extensive peer review, and Fellows are chosen based on the excellence and impact of their work through the use of social science for public benefit.

Announcing the conferment, FAcSS Chair of the Academy, Professor Roger Goodman stated, “Each new Fellow has made an outstanding contribution in their respective field, and together they demonstrate the vital role played by social science in addressing some of our most pressing public issues.”

The Academy of Social Sciences, based in the United Kingdom, is a national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences with a mission to promote social science for public benefit. It is composed of approximately 1100 individual Fellows, mostly in the UK, with a small number from the USA and other countries. With affiliates and societies, it comprises nearly 90,000 social scientists.

Kathleen Montgomery is Professor of the Graduate Division and held the Edward A. Dickson Emerita Professorship for the UCR campus in 2014. She is also Emerita Professor of Organizations and Management in the UCR School of Business. Professor Montgomery has been a visiting scholar at Oxford University, Stanford, and UCLA, and is an Honorary Associate at Sydney Health Ethics (formerly, the Centre for Values, Ethics, and the Law in Medicine) at the University of Sydney.  She is co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Healthcare Management (2016) and the forthcoming volume, Medical Professionals: Contending with Competing Roles and Responsibilities (Routledge Studies in Health Management, 2018).

Professor Montgomery received her Ph.D. in sociology from New York University, where she began her research on professional-organizational relationships. Her current research continues this stream, now focusing on issues of trust, integrity, and behavioral norms. Before her retirement from UCR in 2010, she was a frequent participant in the University Honors Program and in the campus-wide diversity initiative, Making Excellence Inclusive. Professor Montgomery is the 2011 recipient of the Myron D. Fottler Exceptional Service Award from the Academy of Management’s Health Care Management Division, in recognition of a career of contributions to the profession in research, professional leadership, and mentoring.
