On October 29, the Inland Empire chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants (CalCPA) presented UCR student Jonathan Pittard with a $1,000 scholarship for achievement as an outstanding accounting student. He was one of fourteen student recipients representing the four-year colleges and universities of the CalCPA's Inland Empire chapter area. Selected scholarship recipients must have intent to pursue a career in accounting and a CPA license.

A fourth-year business administration student with a concentration in accounting, Pittard is also the current president of the Accounting Society at UCR (ASUCR). His future plans include establishing himself as a prominent accountant at a reputable accounting firm and obtaining his CPA license.

"I feel very blessed to have won the scholarship, and look forward to getting involved with CalCPA after I graduate this year," Pittard said. "I would love to contribute to an organization that rewards students for their hard work. Students like myself tend to work part-time and are in need of scholarships such as this to enable them to continue focusing on school without having to devote inordinate amounts of time working to cover their expenses. CalCPA has helped me and many others continue to 'fight the good fight.'"

Asked of UCR's contribution to his accounting education, he said: "If I had not gone to UCR, I would not have gotten the job offer that I currently have and would be completely ignorant of how the accounting industry functions. My accounting professors have all been highly qualified and most are currently in public accounting as they teach. This gives students the opportunity to hear about the industry and how things are done, which is an invaluable benefit to the education at UCR. If students get involved in organizations such as CalCPA and the Accounting Society, they can obtain valuable knowledge and potential job offers."
