UCR Business Teams Win at the 53rd Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition

UCR Business teams won first place in the top categories at the 53rd Annual International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition (ICBSC), claiming the fifth consecutive win by the UCR Business teams.

For the past four months, two teams from UCR School of Business have been competing diligently in the business strategy competition. The teams were formed from a selected group of undergraduate and graduate business students under the direction of Dr. Sean Jasso. From April 20-22, twenty-three teams from top business schools in the U.S. and internationally traveled to Anaheim, California to compete in the final phase of the simulation.

Both teams placed first in the different categories. The first team, led by Alyssa Stump, 1st-year MBA student, was awarded "Best Overall Performance" as well as "Best Business Documents".  The second team, led by graduating MBA, Shayne Bradshaw, was awarded "Best Overall Performance".

“Each team demonstrated outstanding leadership and precision in their strategic management of their companies - a true testament of Tartan Soul,” said Dr. Jasso, who has advised the winning teams for the past five years.

During the months before the competition, teams develop product prototypes, strategic business plans, income statements, balance sheets, and annual reports all reviewed by a board of directors. When in Anaheim, teams made quarterly decisions for a ‘two-year period’, culminating in a rigorous presentation prepared on site to their board of directors.

"This was an extraordinary experience,” said Alyssa Stump, who participated last year as the 'Operations Department' and this year came back to lead the team as CEO. “It was a pleasure working with my team and with Dr. Jasso as an advisor. I couldn't have asked for better teammates to take home our two wins this year."

The ICBSC began in 1965, challenging students in direct competition with other college teams in running a stimulated or virtual manufacturing company. It is known as the longest running, most comprehensive business competition in the world. The UC Riverside teams are selected from a large pool of applicants during the fall term. By January, the teams are competing weekly against other university teams in a simulated competitive environment. The teams consist of four to six students creating an actual company and are responsible for making weekly strategic decisions covering every element of general management -  global supply chain, operations, human resources, marketing, finance, plant production, and more.

“The ICBSC was a rigorous and rewarding challenge. I'm proud of both teams for their well-earned achievement,” said team leader Shayne Bradshaw. “We want to thank Dean Wang, Dr. Jasso and the School of Business for their support.”

UCR has placed in the top tier for the past five consecutive years, bringing a learning experience unique among business strategy competitions and showcasing the incredible talent, teamwork and perseverance of our business students.
