Fundraiser delivers Thankgiving dinners to over 20 families in Riverside

In the morning of November 23rd, a group of over 20 volunteers made up of students, faculty and staff gathered in the lobby of the A. Gary Anderson Building for the delivery of Thanksgiving dinners to families in the Riverside community.

Mark Estrada, Associate Director of Graduate Programs, organized the fundraiser in partnership with The Greater Riverside Hispanic Chamber of Commerce who helped connect the program with families in the community. The AGSM Graduate Student Ambassadors, AGSM Student Association, and Professor Sean Jasso also assisted in raising the money.

“While growing up, my parents and especially my grandfather, taught me it is always better to give than receive,” Estrada said, while speaking to the volunteers. “This is an important lesson I always try to live by. During the holidays, I would accompany my parents to drop off turkey dinners and presents to those less fortunate. This is where the idea of the First Annual Student Ambassador and Student Association Turkey Dinner Fundraiser came from.”

The original goal for the Turkey Dinner Fundraiser was to raise $600 and deliver 10 dinners. But thanks to the efforts of Mark Estrada, Jordan Cullen, Chief Graduate Student Ambassador, Shayne Bradshaw-Foster, President of the Graduate Student Association, and Prof. Jasso, they exceeded expectations by raising over $2,200.  Twenty families - over 160 individuals - received full turkey dinners and $760 were donated to a homeless shelter to feed families on Thanksgiving.

“The event was very successful and it was a heartfelt moment to see our students excited about delivering meals to the needy and having a positive impact on hundreds of people in the UCR service area.  I am thankful for their generosity and to be part of such a wonderful and inspiring team!” Estrada said.

Touched and overjoyed, some families and volunteers shed tears while delivering the dinners. With the First Annual Turkey Dinner Fundraiser having a successful and fulfilling outcome that benefited not only the families, but also the people involved in the delivery, hopefully next year’s event will be just as rewarding.
