SoBA News

(June 15, 2010)

On June 11, 2010, the UCR School of Business Administration (SoBA) conferred degrees to business MBA and bachelor's degree candidates for the second year at the The 56th Annual Commencement. Prior to 2009, the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences (CHASS) had conferred those degrees.

Dean David W. Stewart and Chancellor Tim White were at the event to award the degrees. Also in attendance was current UCR Alumni Association President, Laurie Maguire (1977, 1980 M.Admin) as the alumni speaker. The undergraduate student speaker was Linda Ong who, along with her BS in business administration also graduated with a minor in journalism, having served as a staff writer for the UCR Highlander. The MBA student speaker was Erin Peach, who was part of the successful UCR team that competed at the Association of Latino Professionals in Finance & Accounting (ALPFA) Case Study Competition and finished in the top eight of 28 schools; she will be joining Ernst & Young after graduation. The keynote speaker was Chris Lam (BS 1991), President/CEO of the San Francisco-based company Pucci Foods. He graduated from UCR with a BS in business administration and a BA in economics.

The business school encourages its recent graduates, who by default become its newest alumni, to take advantage of the UCR SoBA Alumni Network. They can join the network via Facebook and LinkedIn. To help launch the network, SoBA recently appointed a new chairman of Alumni Relations, Mickey McGuire (MBA 1999). McGuire, the current Director of Managed IT Services at Acorn Technology, will be holding the first ever Alumni Advisory Board Meeting on June 15; all alumni are invited to join the meeting (for more details, contact Director of Development Brent Hunter). He said, "If you would like to serve in your geographic area and help maintain a network in your region, please contact me at mmcguire@acorntechcorp."
