SoBA Global Programs Team Returns from India and Turkey

(January 21, 2014)

For many college students, winter break conjures up images of rest, relaxation, and great food. Whether catching up with friends locally or back at home with family, academics are the least of students' worries. However, a group of UCR Business students spent this year's winter break doing the exact opposite.

From December 11-19, 2013, the SoBA Global Programs held their second trip to Mumbai, India concluding in Istanbul, Turkey.  The week-long intensive exposed the team to the massive city of Mumbai, India's financial capital and Turkey's largest city located both in Europe and Asia.  Corporate and cultural site visits included:

India

  • Tata Consultancy, one of the world's leading IT consulting firms
  • National Stock Exchange of India, India's largest exchange
  • The American Consulate
  • The Gateway of India, one of India's most famous colonial landmarks

Turkey

  • The Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, among the world's largest and most famous mosques
  • Basilica Cistern, the world's largest underground cistern built in the 6th century
  • The Grand Bazaar, one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world dating from the 15th century
  • Alarko Headquarters, Turkey's largest conglomerate company

University of Mumbai, one of India's oldest and most distinguished universities, served as the host university.  Students heard customized lectures from Indian faculty and practitioners on topics ranging from the history of India and Mumbai, India's liberalization, privatization, and globalization initiatives, and the future of the Indian economy.  While in Istanbul, students enjoyed lectures on the history and future of Turkey by UCR MBA alum, Ece Baykut, now a brand management expert working in Istanbul.  The program concluded with a personalized presentation by the CEO of Alarko Holdings.

The SoBA Global Programs is now enrolling for the next trip during spring break to University of Oxford where students will live in residence at Mansfield College taking part in UCR's customized program, Oxford Young Entrepreneurial Leadership Program.  Enjoy the video of the "UCR in India" trip and visit the links below to learn more about SoBA's exciting trips to the world's most important markets
