For Employers

Why Should Your Company Offer MBA Fieldwork?

Students pursuing a graduate degree in The A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management MBA program must complete a fieldwork/experiential learning project as part of their matriculation.

  • MBA students who experience a productive fieldwork experience can serve as your company’s greatest champions, both on campus and in the larger business world.
  • You will have access to students with specialized skills to perform projects that you may not have the staff or time to complete.
  • We can help you connect with MBA talent to help meet your future full-time recruitment needs.
  • Becoming a partner with AGSM can raise your company’s profile with the campus and the community.

What is MBA fieldwork?

Fieldwork can take the form of a full-time summer job, a part-time job during the school year, or a long- or short-term project.
Recruiting for summer fieldwork begins in the fall and continues through spring. A typical summer fieldwork is structured as a three-month independent project or varying assignments throughout the summer.

How does MBA fieldwork differ from undergraduate internships?

The most significant difference between an undergraduate and an MBA academic internship is experience. MBA interns are more experienced in solving complex problems. They are inquisitive, resourceful and able to complete projects with a minimum of training. MBA interns seek experiences that add value to their resumes and degrees.

Can students receive class credit for fieldwork?

Yes, they can. Fieldwork is required in the UCR MBA program, increasing the likelihood of locating a good match for your company’s needs.

Can students be paid and if so, what are the salary expectations of an MBA intern?

Compensation is agreed to prior to the start of the fieldwork and is at the discretion of the employer.

What do I need to do as the employer?

As the employer, you play a key role in helping to educate the next generation of business leaders. Most importantly, you must provide your intern with meaningful responsibilities that can produce tangible results and provide value-added skills and ensure not less than 120 total hours of work over at least five weeks.

How do MBA students benefit from fieldwork?

Fieldwork can lead to mutually-beneficial relationships, including full-time employment, while helping students gain meaningful skills and experiences to apply toward their career goals. A student’s interest in a chosen industry, work function, or set of responsibilities can be confirmed.
