CRITERIA FOR ADMISSION TO THE MBA PROGRAM

  • Open to eligible students from all undergraduate majors
  • Admission is based on:
    • GPA for the last 2 years of undergraduate work
    • GMAT (Graduate Management Admissions Test) scores
    • Letters of recommendation
    • Meeting general requirements for graduate status, as set forth in UCR’s General Catalog
    • Potential for success in the program

MBA CURRICULUM

The curriculum consists of 6 major components (20 courses, 80 quarter units):

  1. Communication Workshop - 1 course (2 units, non-degree credit)
  2. Core Courses - 9 courses (36 quarter units)
  3. Electives - 7-9 courses (28-36 quarter units)
  4. Internship - 1 course (4 quarter units)
  5. Capstone Course - 1 course (4 quarter units)
  6. Project or Thesis - (O units for Project, up to 8 units for Thesis)

1. Communication Workshop

  • A non-degree-credit workshop required of all students.
    • Management 404 - Communications, Leadership, Teams and Ethics.

2. Core Courses

  • For the development of basic managerial skills needed by any manager.
  • Students are required to complete 9 core courses (36 quarter units).
    • Management 200 - Organizational Behavior and Theory
    • Management 201 - Statistics for Management
    • Management 202 - Financial Management
    • Management 203 - Managerial Economics
    • Management 205 - Information Systems
    • Management 207 - Operations Management for Competitive Advantage
    • Management 209 - Marketing Management
    • Management 211 - Financial Accounting
    • Management 235 - Strategic Management

3. Electives

  • Students are required to complete 28 to 36 units of electives, which are offered in 9 areas, including:
    • Accounting
    • Entrepreneurial Management
    • Finance
    • General Management
    • Human Resources Management/Organizational Behavior
    • International Management
    • Management Information Systems
    • Management Science/Operations Management
    • Marketing

4. Internships

  • Provides management experience complementary to formal classroom studies.
  • Designed to provide meaningful work experience in a variety of industries, allowing application of academic knowledge and skills to a business.
  • Normally taken after completion of core courses.
  • Currently employed students may be allowed to develop projects related to their current employment (4 quarter units).

5. Capstone Course (Management 238)

  • Team-taught, integrative case course on managing the complex tasks of the total organization.
  • Examines the interdependence of the functional areas of management.
  • Student teams analyze cases involving several functional areas and recommend actions for improvement.

6. Case Project or Thesis

  • Students have a choice of completing either:
    • A group case analysis as part of the capstone Management Synthesis course, OR
    • An individual Thesis (Management 299). This project serves in lieu of a comprehensive examination for students who choose not to write a thesis.
