The Department of Accounting and Information Systems at AGSM is responsible for the design and staffing of undergraduate and graduate courses in both accounting and information systems.
Accounting
Accounting focuses on the development, interpretation and communication of financial and operational information for effective decision-making. Because entities compete for economic resources, accounting information is essential to managers for planning and controlling activities.
Accountants measure the results of economic activities and report or attest to such activity to investors, management, regulators and other stakeholders. Our courses and related programs are designed to prepare students to begin careers in areas such as audit and assurance, management accounting, taxation, financial accounting, and management consulting. We strive to provide our graduates with an innovative learning experience in which students have the opportunity to acquire the technical knowledge recommended for the accounting and auditing profession as well as other valued skills such as critical thinking skills, communication skills, interpersonal skills, and strategic self-presentation skills.
The curriculum in the undergraduate accounting program provides many of the foundational requirements for professional certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA).
Information Systems
Information Systems is focused on helping organizations leverage technology in order to create or sustain a competitive advantage. To achieve this, a good understanding of both fundamental technologies and management are crucial. While Information Technology (IT) constitutes the tools, Information Systems is centered on understanding the tools and their interactions and integration with people and processes throughout an organization.
Managers can no longer manage without the use of information systems. Due to the rapid pace of change occurring in the world of technology, managers must be able to quickly understand the implications of new technology on their organization. Consequently, our students often pursue careers in consulting, where a comprehensive view of management is needed. Our curriculum is also well suited for students who focus on other areas of management, such as marketing, accounting, operations, finance, and general management.
The IS curriculum provides a foundation for understanding technology, and its applications and roles in management. Our courses cover an exciting span of technical issues, analytical issues, as well as organizational and business issues.
