Shumin Xiao

I became interested in accounting during as an undergraduate student and set my career goal to work in the auditing field. My view is that an auditor needs to act as a detective to search for any potential fraud or errors, which is really exciting for me. The MPAc program in AGSM offers me the essential skills and knowledge for this profession.

In addition, the diversity and dynamic of University of California, Riverside campus impressed me a lot as undergraduate exchange student, which led me to choose AGSM without hesitation. I really enjoy my graduate life here. Professors challenge us to think creatively by the types of questions they ask during class that push me to think. The curriculum and group projects are very practical. Our projects and case studies originate from real company profiles which provide me with hands-on learning experience that are useful and practical in the future career.

I have appreciated the diversity of backgrounds of the MPAc candidates; I have met people from my home country, U.S, India, Europe, and Mexico. This diversity has exposed me to an international environment that has created sparks in my mind of new ideas when communicating with them.

There are numerous opportunities to participate in several student organizations and events to attend. I joined AGSM student association and the Ambassador program. I have participated in several events such as volunteer work, company visits, and social trips and so on. These events allow me to meet business leaders and gain valuable contacts. Also, I have really improved my leadership and communication skills through these events. I feel that my experience at AGSM makes me more confident and prepared to take a leadership position in accounting.
